Psalm 49:20
People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.
Reflection
This is one of the praying psalms in the bible and it is like a sermon on its own. What we read in the psalm especially today’s verse is profound wisdom that is applicable to daily life. The psalm is consistent with what we read in the entire bible and it resonates with the words of Matthew 6:20, “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.” Wealth cannot buy faith or good moral life but that is only acquired through learning the word of God and having faith in God. Remember that the beginning of all wisdom is the fear of God. We can acquire riches through hardworking or inheriting it from our parents but that does not give us the human face. Lack of the faith and the knowledge of God places us at the same level with beasts and the end result is perishing. Therefore, let us remember yesterday’s gospel text, “seek ye the kingdom of God and everything shall be added. Let us not seek honour or wealth without seeking God.
Collect
Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and
made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all
your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus
Christ your Son our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns
supreme over all things, now and for ever. Amen
