Psalm 31:19

How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you.

Reflection

This psalm is usually categorized as an individual lament. The psalm can be divided into two major segments which are; verses 1-18 are a prayer and verses 19-24 express praise and thanksgiving. The Hebrew word used for ‘goodness’ is tob whichhas a variety of meanings, such as good or moral. In using tob to describe Yahweh, the psalmist is ascribing those positive characteristics to him. According to the psalmist, such goodness does not belong to Yahweh alone, for Yahweh has laid them up for those who fear him and take refuge in him. Yahweh’s followers are also good, moral, and profitable. As we go weekend let us pursue goodness and shun evil and please continue to remember the people of Turkey and Syria as the search for missing people continues.

Collect

We pray for the people of Central Turkey and North West Syria, whose lives have been devastated by the earthquake. Be present, O Lord, our Good Shepherd, to bring comfort, relief, shelter and human kindness. Shield the people who suffer, console those who are bereaved, prosper the provision of relief, strengthen the work of emergency teams, and shine your light and hope in the midst of despair, and, We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
