Isaiah 51:17

Awake, awake! Rise up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath, you who have drained to its dregs the goblet that makes people stagger.

Reflection

In today’s text, God is calling upon his people to mind the things that belong to their everlasting peace. Jerusalem had provoked and angered God, and was made to taste the bitter fruits. The symbol of a cup has been used in other passages to refer to suffering and in this context they have suffered because of the wrath of God. Instead of God protecting them He has subjected them to foreign powers to torment them. Those who should have been her comforters, were their own tormentors. They have lost their identity and were in great confusion. God is therefore calling them to awake form this slumber and now it is right time for Him to redeem them. Their gone through enough suffering and now it is the right time them to return to their God who will protect and care for them. God will amend their lives and rebuild their nation. Brothers and sisters, we sometimes go through difficult moments in life but God will never abandon us. He calls us back to himself and what is needed is for us to be awake and listen to His call. This period of epiphany is a time when God manifests Himself to us in various ways, and are we in position to detect His revelation? May the almighty God give us the ability to discern His call. Amen.

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God now and forever. Amen.
