Matthew 26:8-11
When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.” Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.
Reflection
This occasion of the anointing of Jesus by an unnamed woman is recorded by Matthew at the beginning of Jesus’ passion story. The interpretation is that it was an act to prepare for his burial which was now clearly imminent. This woman did her best by bringing expensive oil to anoint Jesus’ body and the disciples interpreted it as waste of money that could have been used for something better. Three things that I need to focus on for my devotion are; 1. When you decide to do something for God you should do it to your best not just for the purpose of duty. It can be any form of service that you intend to offer to God, do it to the best not for the sake of doing. 2. Do not undermine someone’s commitment to God. The way someone express her/himself to God is determined by his/her personal relationship with God. Therefore, do not stand as a judge for other people’s commitments to God. 3. Do not divert other people’s commitments to your own interest. Ministries are different and are there to compliment each other.
Collect
Almighty God, whose Son revealed in signs and miracles the
wonder of your saving presence: renew your people with your
heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your
mighty power; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is
alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever. Amen
