1 Samuel 2:1-2

Then Hannah prayed and said: “My heart rejoices in the Lord;
 in the Lord my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

This was a prayer by Hannah that was offered to the Lord as soon as she leaves her baby boy Samuel in the service of the Lord. She is not rejoicing because she left the boy there but because of what the Lord has done to her. This is a story that emanated from chapter one when Hannah was despised by Peninnah who was also Elkanah´s other wife. After Hannah had cried to the Lord, her prayers were answered and she made a vow that she was going to give the child to the Lord. It is a story with so many similarities with the Christmas story and with some variations in many different ways as well. Both Mary and Hannah gave birth to baby boys who were to spend their entire life in the services of the Lord. They gave birth to children who will not belong to them. Both children were going to be great but Jesus was however going to supersede Samuel because he was the Messiah born not of human effort but incarnated from heaven. In her prayer, Hannah, we see great faith in the power of God by Hannah hence she uses the metaphor of a horn which was a symbol of power, authority, might, and dominion. As we prepare for Christmas let us remember that our salvation comes from God alone.

Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts,
that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ your Son was made known by the message of an angel, may, by his passion and cross, be brought to the glory of his resurrection, through Jesus Christ,  our Saviour, who is alive with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
