Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible
Today´s text provides us with a good working definition of faith and the author goes on to give elaborate examples of faith situations in the Bible. Many times we confuse the word ´faith´ with positive thinking or confidence in something. True Biblical faith has God as its object. There is real value in positive thinking and confidence, but this is not the meaning of faith. Four important things are important from Hebrew´s definition. First, there is a focus on the future and sometimes this future is not clear. Second, there is a realization of the unseen realities. These realities are different from empirical evidence. Third, there is a focus on gaining God´s grace. Four, there is a need to comprehend creation. These four elements are essential in true biblical faith.
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of
darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the
time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ
came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when
he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
