James 4:6-7
Text for Reflection
But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says, ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Devotion
Chapter 4 builds on the foundation of the end of chapter 3, where the author has warned people against living according to the world’s wisdom which has resulted in great conflict among his readers. Today´s context is characterized by fighting against each other and living an adulterous life. What is the remedy for such people? They should submit themselves to God and resist the devil. According to James, such submission comes with humility and without being humble it is difficult for someone to submit to God. Pride in the life of a Christian is the antithesis of the kingdom of God. Many fall because of pride. Even wars among nations erupt because of pride. The devil fell from God´s presence because of pride. Therefore, brothers and sisters, today let us learn to be humble before the throne of God.
Let Us Pray.
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of
darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the
time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ
came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when
he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
