Titus 1:1-4

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,

To Titus, my true son in our common faith:

Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

This epistle belongs to the category of pastoral letters by Paul of whom the other two pastoral letters are 1 and 2 Timothy. In the opening verses of this letter, Paul does his usual salutation before getting into the main reason for writing the letter. In verse 1, Paul makes it clear that he is a servant of God and apostle of Jesus Christ. This reminds us of his call on the way to Damascus when he encountered a flashing light that blinded him and the voice that spoke to him. That theophanic experience remained engraved in Pual´s mind throughout his ministry. Understanding who we are is important for keeping us focused on our reason for existence. Paul knew that as an apostle of Christ, he was called to further the faith of Christ to those whom God has chosen. In the letter, he mentions Titus as his true son. It is highly unlikely that Titus was Paul´s biological son but it implies that Paul was responsible for the conversion of Titus. This is why Titus is mentioned as a true son in common faith. Their father-son relationship was based on their faith in Jesus Christ. Paul asks for the grace and peace of Christ to be on Titus. This was his signature writing whenever he introduces his letter. Why is Paul writing this letter to Titus? In our next devotions, we will explore based on the contents of the letter why Paul was writing this letter.

Takeaways for today

  1. It is always important to know the reason for our existence before God.
  2. Through the sharing of our Christian faith, we become a family.
  3. We need to keep our hope in eternal life
