Psalm 3.3-4
But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy mountain.

David is writing the psalm in terrible times as his throne is under the threat of his son Absalom. His friends have neglected him. Though his friends think that his God has neglected him, David remains faithful to God. He continues to trust in God´s intervention and this is why in today´s verse, he continues to mention that the Lord is his shield. A shield is a symbol of defense from the arrows of the enemy. In ancient times, soldiers used shields, spears, and knives which might be a different story today in a world of missiles and atomic bombs. Though his enemies throw arrows at him, David is confident that God protects him.

However, David is aware that he has to call out to God for him to come and provide protection for him. He understands the importance of prayer in communicating with God. Yes, God protects us but we need to be in a good relationship with him.
Three Lessons for Today

- Those who believe in God should not be afraid of the enemy of the devil because God is all powerful
- Prayer is key in establishing our relationship with God
- God will never abandon us even in times of chaos.
