Psalm 2:2

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and his anointed saying…

In today´s verse, the psalmist is now unpacking the subject of what nations and people conspiring and plotting in vain. The subject of discussion is the kings of the earth and rulers who are setting themselves against the Lord and his anointed. The verse is incomplete in terms of what is their plan of action against the Lord and the anointed and probably we will get to know this plan of action in the next verse. The word ´set´ in this context implies hostile intent. These are deliberate preparations and arrangements. It is like they are gathering their armies in military formation in preparation to overthrow the Lord and his Anointed.

The word ´anointed´ is from the Hebrew word ´mashiyach´ meaning the process of inaugurating someone into a certain role by anointing with oil. Such investiture was done on the installation of three important office bearers; prophet, priest, and king. Prophets delivered the Lord´s message to the people, priests represented people before the Lord, and kings rule people on behalf of the lord. Therefore it is possible that the kings are conspiring against either other fellow kings, priests, or prophets. That will come out clearly in the next verses. Two takeaways for today; 1. We need to be careful against conspiring against our God-given leaders when they carry out the tasks according to the will of God. 2. Leaders need to understand that they are elected into offices to represent God´s will and not their own selfish gains.
